How English Bulldogs Make Our Lives Better

The year was 1978, and I was 10 years old. My parents were divorced and I was sorting through my stormy life as best as a little boy could. In my childlike effort to cope, I reached out to dogs for unconditional love, friendship and understanding. The dogs answered – they were there for me. Whether it was a stray that was wandering the streets, or an unplanned litter of puppies that needed homes I was a collector of dogs and would bring them home with me. Being a lover of animals came naturally to me, especially a lover of dogs and now dialing in to Bulldogs particularly for almost 3 decades.
I believe that my early childhood circumstances taught me one of the greatest lessons in life: People may speak about unconditional love, but God sent Bulldogs do demonstrate it.
There’s something about the soulful eyes, the silly snorts, and the steadfast presence of a English Bulldog that reminds us we’re never alone. Hope that you guys don’t think that I’m weird (or maybe you’ve already discovered this LOL) but having an English Bulldog around has been a very spiritual experience for me. As a longtime Bulldog lover and breeder, I’ve seen firsthand how these incredible companions transform lives — not just with their charm, but with their loyalty, intuition, and unwavering love.
During my quiet time this morning, I thought about what English Bulldogs have brought into my life. Please feel free to share your own Bulldog stories with me, I’d love to hear them!
1. English Bulldogs give Unconditional Love Like No Other
- English Bulldogs don’t judge. They don’t care what kind of car you drive, how much money you make, or how rough your day was. They’re just present for you!
- When I get home and walk in the door, they greet me like I’m a rock star - with the same excitement — every single time.
- They are patient and forgiving, even when we fall short. The ultimate examples of forgiveness!
2. Total Acceptance
- English Bulldogs love us for who we are — not what we look like or how we act. My babies love me the same even before I shower!
- They teach us the value of simply being rather than performing.
- Their presence reminds us that we are enough.
3. Built-In Comedy Relief
- This is an understatement right? From their snoring and farting to the way they wiggle their butts and give us the “side-eye,” English Bulldogs are natural comedians.
- They have unique personalities and quirks that make them endlessly entertaining.
- I can’t help but smile when Rain Dancer comes wiggling up to me wanting some lovin.
4. Companionship in Loneliness
- English Bulldogs don’t just sit next to you — they’re with you. They lean into you (do they really not understand personal space, or is it that they know we need them to be closer?)
- They seem to intuit when we’re feeling low and quietly press against us, reminding us we’re not alone.
- Ideal for people dealing with anxiety, depression, or isolation — they’re like built-in therapy dogs. Eva and I have referred to them as emotional support dogs years before the term became popular – because that’s what they’ve truly been for us!
5. Comfort in Sadness
- English Bulldogs are masters at emotional support without saying a word. They just “know” when we need a quiet, listening friend.
- Their quiet presence, warmth, and eye contact are incredibly healing.
- They help us process grief and offer peace in our most vulnerable moments.
6. Confidence Boosters
- English Bulldogs believe in us — fully, deeply, and always. You’ve heard “Be the person your Bulldog thinks you are” and it’s true that they have real faith in us.
- They don’t see our flaws; they see our leadership, our heart, and our love.
- If we saw ourselves through their eyes, we’d feel like we could conquer the world.
7. They Teach Us to Slow Down and Be Present
- English Bulldogs aren’t in a rush. They take their time, enjoy the moment, and savor the nap.
- In a fast-paced world, Bulldogs remind us of the power of rest, stillness, and simple joys.
A Bulldog’s Love has been Life-Changing for me
Some would say that the world has gone crazy. Maybe it has. For me personally - in a world full of noise, chaos, and uncertainty, an English Bulldog brings peace, laughter, and love. These guys don’t just live in our homes — they live in our hearts. And if we’re lucky enough to share our lives with one, we’re already richer than most.
