The $3,000 Bulldog Is Not the Cheap One.
I want to describe something to you, because most people buying their first bulldog have never had it described to them.
It starts small. The snoring is louder than you expected. They tire out halfway through a walk and you carry them home, and you tell yourself that is just bulldogs. Then it is summer, and you realize you cannot take them outside between eleven and four. Then there is a night where you lie awake listening to them struggle to breathe in the next room, and you are looking up emergency vets at two in the morning.
Then a vet says the word surgery, and you are sitting in a parking lot working out how you are going to find $4,000 for a dog your family has already fallen completely in love with.
Nobody plans for that. But it is the ordinary experience of owning a poorly bred bulldog, and it is the reason so many of them end up in rescues.
Here is what it costs.
The difference between a cheap bulldog and one of mine is around $3,000–$4,000 today.
Over that dog's life, the cheap one will cost you somewhere between $10,000–$30,000 more.
That is the part nobody talks about.
And it is not even the money that families tell me about afterwards. It is the ten years of appointments. It is watching an animal you love struggle to do ordinary things. That is the part you cannot get a refund on.

Here is the thing most people never think to ask a breeder.
A breeder who started five years ago is working with dogs they bought. They chose from whatever was available, and whatever those dogs carry is what their puppies will carry.

You cannot buy that. You cannot shortcut it or certify it. It only exists if somebody started thirty years ago and never once broke the rule.

Do Not Take My Word For It. Here Is How to Check Any Breeder, Including Me.
So here is what I would tell my own family to look for.
Use this on me. Use it on every breeder you talk to.
Look at the nostrils.
They should be open. If they look like thin slits pinched shut, that dog is working hard to breathe and it will get worse, not better.
Listen to the dog at rest.
A bulldog lying still in a cool room should be quiet. Rattling, snorting and honking while resting is not personality. It is an airway that is not working.
Watch it move.
Ask for video of the dog walking and playing, not sitting still. You want a dog that moves freely and does not run out of steam in twenty seconds.
Look at the eyes.
Clear and open. Not weepy, red, or half closed.
Ask what health testing they do, and ask what they do with the results.
Plenty of breeders test. The real question is whether a bad result actually changes a pairing.
Ask to see the parents.
Not one photo. Ask what the parents are like at five years old.
Ask what happens if something goes wrong in three years.
Listen carefully to the answer. Most of the industry goes quiet after the sale.
If a breeder gets uncomfortable with any of these questions, you have your answer.

Look at the cost per year, because that is the whole argument in one line.
Take everything the dog costs you across its entire life, then divide it by the years you actually get to spend with them. Mine work out cheaper every single year, and you get roughly twice as many of those years.

Why I Do It This Way.
As a kid I used to hide stray dogs in my bedroom and sneak food out of the kitchen to feed them. Eva was rescuing dogs before she could drive. When our paths crossed in 1987, so did our love for animals.

I know $5K to $10K is a lot of money. For plenty of good families it is more than they can put into a dog right now, and there is nothing wrong with that at all.
If that is where you are, I am not going to try to talk you into it. But I will ask you to do one thing.

That is the purchase that hurts people. Not the price, the surprise. A family stretches for a bargain and ends up with an animal that needs $1,000s of surgery before its second birthday, and by then they are attached and there is no good option left.

Do you ship puppies?
Never as cargo. Every IAB puppy is escorted by a trained puppy nanny from my home to yours, hand carried the whole way.
I'm not in Texas. Can I still get a puppy?
Absolutely. I place puppies all over the country and I have the network to get them there safely.
