🐾 5 WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR BULLDOG FROM THE SUMMER HEAT
We love our Bulldogs like family. And we know that you do too! Things are heating up outside here in Texas. Protecting your pets from the heat is one of the most important things we can do to give them a longer, healthier life. Don’t forget: PREVENTION is everything!
☀️ 1. Avoid the Hottest Times of Day
- Bulldogs are brachycephalic, meaning they already struggle with breathing — add heat, and it becomes dangerous.
- Tip: Walk them early morning or after sunset when temps are cooler.
- Know heatstroke signs: heavy panting, excessive drooling, disorientation, bloodshot eyes and vomiting.
💧 2. Hydration is Everything
- Always have clean, cold water available — even when outside for a short time.
- Add ice cubes to water bowls or give dog-safe frozen treats Use this Beef Bone Broth and create your own DIY popsicle, or as we like to call it A PUPSICLE! Check out this bone broth: https://iambulldog.com/collections/shop/products/pawpairings%C2%AE-beef-bone-broth-3-0-oz
- Consider electrolyte-enhanced water or low-sodium bone broth on extra hot days.
🌬️ 3. Cooling Tools: Your Bulldog’s Best Friend
- Give your pet even more cooling advantages with:
- Cooling vests or bandanas
- Portable fans
- Raised cooling beds that allow airflow under their belly
Bulldogs don’t regulate body temp efficiently, so these tools can be vital.
🛁 4. Summer Shave Down (We just had a SPA DAY here at I AM BULLDOG!)
- During SPA DAY we shaved our Bulldogs in order to help:
- Keep them cooler
- Reduce shedding
- Make flea/tick detection easier
- We’re not just trying to look good over here, but actually implement a good health strategy for our babies.
🏠 5. Never Leave Them in a Hot Car or Direct Sun
- Even 5–10 minutes in a hot car can be fatal.
- Direct sun exposure can overheat Bulldogs fast — give them shade or indoor access.
Bonus Tips to Mention:
- Watch out for hot pavement (if you can’t hold your hand on it for 7 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws)
- Don't rely on a fan alone — Bulldogs cool off by panting, not sweating. A fan alone only circulates existing hot air. Evaporative cooling with a fan works much better!
